The Sermon on the Mount Class Notes:

Part I:  The Kingdom Citizen Introduced (5:1-16)

A different people who make a difference in the world.

The Beatitudes (v1-12):

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (v3)

“Poor in Spirit describes what we ARE, not what we HAVE.”

We have to see our need for forgiveness to receive it.

“Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.” (v4)

“We mourn over what we’ve done, not what has been done to us.”

“Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.” (v5)

      “Meekness does not equal weakness.”

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, For they shall be filled.” (v6)

“This is a pressing, daily need, not an occasional want.”

“Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.” (v7)

“I always forgive, because I’ve been forgiven all.”

“Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.” (v8)

“The pure is heart are the utterly sincere—those with single-minded devotion to God (think double-minded, not dirty-minded).”

“Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.” (v9)

“A peaceMAKER is more than a peaceKEEPER.”

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (v10)

“Popularity is not a Christian characteristic.”

Salt and Light (v13-16):

      Genesis 12:2 “I will bless you…and you shall be a blessing…”

How does salt lose its flavor?

     Contamination!

It makes no sense to hide light (unless you don’t want to be seen)!

We should be different, because that is the only way to make a difference!

Part II:  Righteousness Exceeding the Scribes and Pharisees

Part II (A):  Jesus and the Old Law

“I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill.”

Jesus and the Old Law (v17-20):

1.      Jesus did not come to destroy the Law and Prophets.

2.      Jesus came to fulfill the Law.

3.      Jesus respected and followed the authority of the Old Law.

4.      Jesus taught that the Old Law would end.
